༄ Can cutting down on gluten help?

The psychoneuroimmunologist, Xevi Verdaguer, maintains that reducing the consumption of gluten and even eliminating it from the diet, temporarily, with the help of a specialist, helps to restore the balance of the intestinal microbiota in people suffering from chronic diseases. Verdaguer, author of the best-seller “Transform your health” , underlines the importance of regulating the intestinal microbiota because it is key to health. The specialist made these statements at the inauguration of [0%  Gluten ] in Madrid (Spain).

Xevi Verdaguer confirms that people who have an unbalanced intestinal microbiota due to a “lack of bacterial diversity” or an excess of “proteolytic bacteria” have a greater sensitivity to gluten and can improve their health by reducing their consumption. The specialist assures that this scenario "is very common" among the population that usually takes "antibiotics, contraceptives or anti-inflammatories and follows an unbalanced diet."

"This disorder affects a significant number of people who" will be able to identify a greater sensitivity to gluten due to an alteration in the way they go on their stomach; either due to constipation, pasty stools or irritable colon, with excess gas ”, according to the specialist.

Gluten free diet

Verdaguer underlines the importance of a "rigorous gluten-free diet" for allergy sufferers or for people with celiac disease (gluten intolerant). However, -explains- that "there are a large number of people who have a sensitivity to gluten without being celiac and who suffer from problems that we previously thought were chronic." And, in this sense, he explains that he suffered from "allergies and an auto-immune disease" ·.

The psychoneuroimmunologist specifies that sensitivity to these cereals is not caused only by "gluten but by other components such as trypsin amylase inhibitors or fructans." And, as he points out, "what they do is generate more gas, more digestive problems and the onset of an inflammatory problem in the body, predisposing to chronic pain or chronic fatigue."

Verdaguer concludes that it is "decisive" for well-being to "take care of the health of the intestine and pay attention to digestion and evacuation." "And if a problem arises" - he adds - "go to a psychoneuroimmunology specialist nutritionist because it will help you regain your quality of life and make better decisions."
